PLA/Flax Composites

On Thursday (5/17/12) the group manufactured composite PLA sheets with flax. Photos have been posted of the composites. A document explaining the manufacturing process and measured results will be posted soon.

Abstract

Most structural insulation panels are made out of petroleum based plastics. The goal of this project was to create a strong, durable panel with good insulation properties. This panel was to be bio-based and made from materials that are significantly "greener" than preexisting solutions. The reason for creating a bio-based panel was to eliminate the carbon footprint left by creating and using currently available insulation panels. The panel was to be a sandwich structure created from polylactic acid (PLA) & flax composites layered on top of foam cores.
